Racing simulation focusing on the sport of Rally Racing

Milestone's WRC World Rally Championship franchise is a long running game series starting in 2001 and being released annually, in slight variations, up until current time. The game showcases the sport of Rally racing. For those unfamiliar, rally racing is grueling tracks over rough terrain that are, usually, mastered only by the most robust of cars. Sliding around hair pin corners and getting air from speed bumps is common, as is mud, dirt roads and long forested stretches with blind corners. This isn't a 500 lap race, it's a 1 lap road race. Milestone has a long history making these games and, when it comes to control and the feel of racing in these conditions, they have it spot on. The graphics, unfortunately, fail to match the physics underneath.

Game Play

Game play is strong. The first few rounds will have you driving a fairly beginner car in order to get the hang of some of the easier tracks. Mastering cornering will take some getting used to and WRX does a great job of requiring you to time your throttle and braking in order to make it through a course. There's support for wheel and controller, and the controls are what fans of Rally would expect, providing a top notch racing experience. Soon enough you'll be gaining sponsors, getting new cars and tuning existing ones with the money you're winning. As with any of the annual games, cars and tracks from the real circuit are included and up to date. With a deep track selection, large roster of cars and lots of options for tuning, the racing part of the game is very strong.

Presentation

As good as this game plays, the looks aren't up to the same standard. Graphics are clunky and flat when in the screens and when racing. The menus and option screens are very practical, but do nothing to advance the athletics of the game. This isn't a story driven game, even the campaign mode is just you progressing through races. This isn't a bad thing, really, but it's a shame that a game that plays so well doesn't present better.

Pros

  • Great game play with realistic controls and physics
  • Track variety, car variety and tuning options are pretty good

Cons

  • Chuncky and unattractive graphics
